today is the celebration of the 109th year of philippine independence. but to the family it'll be my dad's 57th birthday.

for one reason or another, i will not be able to say this to his face today (nor do i think i will be able to, in the future). so i'll greet him here instead:

happy birthday, you old man.

we are not likely to have an instance where we'd sit together for drink -- we have very different tastes in alcohol and mum will probably freak out inside if she actually sees me drinking, but whatever -- but here's a cheer to the man that gave me half his genes.

i can't say you've been a terrific dad, but you weren't a bad one either. i've learned to appreciate the situation i was born in (it could be worse), and i think not having it bad is already a good thing.
