however which way one says it, asking a question like "so how long are you planning to keep [this relationship]?" doesn't really go down well. what a rude question. i think i chose not to answer because i couldn't think of any witty/polite answer for the person who invited me to his party in the first place.
one commits oneself to somebody on the assumption that one will stay with the relationship until the time either person decides the relationship is not worth it anymore. one doesn't go about thinking, "oh, i'll give this three months, and then it's over" at the beginning of a relationship.
