yesterday, late afternoon. the jeep was riding along that bridge/freeway connecting buendia to kalayaan (by passing edsa) and i looked westward to see a red streaks across the horizion. the makati CBD buildings are blocking what it to be sure a very dramatic sunset.
i have memories of watching great sunsets with special people (or people whom i thought were special, at the time). watching that sunset, i wished i was at the breakwaters along manila bay, with a camera on a tripod, watching the great eye of horus sink into the sea.
a week or so ago, after we'd had dinner and had nothing else to do, i decided to drag daryl to manila. we passed by the underpass in quiapo (thinking it'll make a great zombie movie setting), rode to malate, then settled to the bayside area.
daryl asked me why i liked the place so much. i admitted that i don't really know; it's just that i felt comfortable with the anonymity one gets in that place. pointing out to the homeless people sleeping on the benches along the breakwater, he said, "this is the place where people who have nowhere else to go end up."
sadly, it's true.
"so maybe that's why i like it here," i replied. "because i don't know where to go."
