Our word for today is microcosm.

The Oblation was made to moon people. One of the best angles to photograph the statue in Diliman is from behind, where one has a good view of the famous icon's backside.

IMG_3730A friend forwarded this text message yesterday afternoon:

"UP made you in such a way that when the world is sitting, you would be standing. When the world is standing, you would stand out. When the world stands out, you would be outstanding. And when the world tries to be outstanding, you would be the standard. Isang masaya at mayabang na pagbati sa sentenaryong anibersaryo ng UP."

Which is pretty apt, I think, for a university that prides itself with its students' pride. It is always said that UP is a microcosm of the Philippines, and it's that pride of Iskos that frequently shows that. We are, after all, a proud country even if there is nothing else to be proud of except our pride.

One time I was talking to a friend who went to another top university and he described the winner of a student film competition (it was from UP). The production was on a shoestring but they were able to come up with a film that demanded attention. Making something great out of so little is a common thing in UP. It's not that the students are by themselves effortlessly brilliant (brilliance require a lot of hard work to make it appear effortless), but more because they were given so little in the first place.

That, and the fact that they have their prides to consider.
