UNDER A WOVEN CANOPY
Archt. Jomike Tejido's 3rd solo exhibit of acrylic on banig paintings

April 11 - May 4, 2008
Opening cocktails on April 11, at 7pm

Jomike Tejido's 3rd solo exhibit, UNDER A WOVEN CANOPY, is a window to dreamy forests and abstract Philippine animals painted on pandanus mats or banig. Tejido has pioneered his signature acrylic on banig to offer a refreshing, yet distinctly modern Filipino painting style. Traditionally used for sleeping mats or bags, the banig is reborn with vivid, multihued strokes that entwine issues of the environment and culture. The organic material is treated, layered and protected to harness its great potential as an art canvas. Tejido's promotion of agricultural crafts and innovative fine art is a woven statement in each masterpiece, and aims to bring Filipino art to the world.

Under A Woven Canopy is a joint project with Haribon Foundation. In line with issues of rainforestation and threatened species, this exhibition aims to increase viewers' environmental consciousness. Trees with swirl branches act as dainty finger-like projections carrying precious starry fruits, the priceless gifts that trees nurture with their lives. Vibrant renditions of fauna hidden amongst layers of geometric human settlements bring a strong impact through abstract interpretations of their natural colors. Vivid panoramas of animal abstracts remind us that life on earth is not about a single species' dominance, but about dependence on its inhabitants' interconnections, such as that of a woven mat. Through this collection, viewers are reminded that all depend on life brought to us by nature, and that we all share this world under a woven canopy.

Tejido is a practicing architect based in Manila . His background in architecture, children's book illustration, and love for the environment all entwine in his work. His mat paintings were part of group exhibits in Paris, Japan and Manila . His 2nd solo show, Matscapes, was recently held in Singapore in March 2008. Under A Woven Canopy was brought about by Tejido's childhood memories of walking under a canopy of intertwined branches and leaves that has always given him a sense of serenity.

Proceeds of this exhibit will benefit Haribon's Rainforestation and Threatened Species Programs and CCP's Liwasang Kalikasan.
