the smell of freshly opened book pages.

while killing time in fully booked in bonifacio high street, i decided to browse for books -- knowing fully well that i will not stop myself from buying something. i was not disappointed.

i was disappointed though that there are very few discworld books in the bookstore. i've always enjoyed fully booked and bibliarch for stocking more discworld books that their competitors, but last night i've only seen the color of magic and making money. there were some discworld companion books and the graphic novel collection, but i'm not particularly interested in those right now. plus with the folklore of discworld costing nearly 1K, i think i'd go for a discworld book for less than 400 anytime. or even buy 2 books.

in the end, i decided i'd get making money. i haven't started on any of the rincewind books (i'm not too fond of that character), and i liked going postal. it was an easy enough decision to make.

a surprising find was sergei lukyanenko's the night watch; i've been hoping to get a copy of the book for months now. the only book from the tetralogy that was available was twilight watch, which is the last book. as much as possible, i'd like reading series in order; for some time, i hunted for the night watch but none of the local bookstores seemed to carry it. so last night, i was idly browsing through the fanstasy rack and there was one copy of the night watch available. fucking A.

another interesting find were copies of art spiegelman's in the shadow of no towers. it's a large comicbook with a grave black-on-black cover that was previously the post-9/11 cover of the new yorker (also by spiegelman). the book is heavy and printed on hard board, not paper; it felt like an oversized board-book for kids. i'm not to familiar with art spiegelman's works, except for the fact that he drew and wrote the much-acclaimed comic maus.

the book cost P200, so i figured it's a steal anyways. the cashier actually had to ask a senior cashier if the tag on the book was correct; you don't see handsomely bound books tagged for 200 pesos in bookstores that often.

yeah... although electronic documents are very much portable in many ways than one... it's really that enigmatic, if not feel-good, effect that really gives me the kicks. i miss my books.
