before i went to sleep, i was reading an astronomy book where the author briefly mentioned how the circadian rhythm provides natural protection that lowers the risk of breast cancer, or rather, that disruption of the circadian rhythm (he was making a case against excessive night lighting) could increase the risk of the disease. with that unpleasant knowledge in mind, i fell asleep.
i woke up a few hours later because my room felt like an oven; the weather in manila is unbelievably hot. on one hand, i could remove the makeshift curtain i placed on my windows to let the air in and bring a cooler gust to the wind coming from my fan; on the other hand, removing the curtain will let in the bright afternoon sun into the room which will make sleeping more difficult. in the end i decided to remove the curtain, but the air coming into the room was not much of a help, really; the room still felt like an oven. oh man. what i would give to have my shift moved to daytime.
since i was already awake, i checked on my phone and phone my inbox cluttered, as usual, from well-meaning friends who forwarded me various inspiring thoughts for holy week. one began by saying that 98% of people who received that message will ignore it so if one was part of the 2%, one should pass it on to their friends, and then went on with its message: christ was thinking of you when he died on the cross!
personally, i don't think anyone for sure would know what the man on the cross thought exactly while he was dying. what we know of the event are stories from people who proclaimed the man as messiah. it was little different from propaganda, really; for all we know the man was in too much pain to think of any other coherent thoughts.
and if i really want to show my devotion to christ (which i don't have, but some people i know say they do), i wouldn't do it by spamming friends with trite lenten messages. i would live by example, as jesus was attributed to have taught his disciples instead of annoying friends by forwarding my lack of original thought.
anywho, being one of the 98% people who are annoyed by receiving garbage in my phone, i replied to the sender with this: i am not catholic. i hope that should stop any further forwarded messages from him.
